General Scholarship and Conference Information

Please note, all active scholarships for the 31st annual conference will be awarded only to those registrants who plan to attend the conference in Bilbao in-person.

The William H. McNeill Teacher Scholarship

Through the generosity of our donors, the World History Association is pleased to offer one William H. McNeill Teacher Fellowship.  This fellowship provides up to $500 for travel and registration for the WHA annual conference.  The award is open to any K-12 and community college teacher who will be presenting an individual paper or a poster at the annual WHA conference.

The William H. McNeill Teacher Fellowship is offered on a competitive basis and is awarded by a selection committee appointed by the WHA President.

Applicants must include the following: 1) CV or Resume (two pages maximum); 2) a brief essay of no more than 300 words relating their conference presentation to their teaching; and 3) a copy of conference proposal.

The application deadline is 15 March of the conference year.  Applications for the William H. McNeill Teacher Fellowship should be submitted directly to the Executive Director <info@thewha.org>.

Bilbao Conference Scholarship

The World History Association is pleased to announce the creation of two $500 scholarships to be awarded to graduate students and/or early career scholars attending the 2022 conference and in a position of economic need. Eligibility includes demonstrated financial need and proof of acceptance to present at the conference by the Conference Program Committee. To qualify, applicants also must be current members of the WHA and not have previously received a conference waiver or scholarship.

Applicants must include the following: 1) CV (two pages maximum) and 2) a statement of no more than 250 words describing economic need and how the applicant would benefit from attending the annual meeting; and 3) evidence of conference acceptance.

The application deadline is 15 March of the conference year.  Applications for the Bilbao Conference Scholarship should be submitted directly to the WHA Executive Director <info@thewha.org>

Global Teacher Scholarship

To apply for this scholarship, applicants must be a WHA member in the calendar year of the conference to which they intend to attend. The Global Teacher Scholarship will be awarded only to secondary school teachers, with preference given in 2022 to those residing in Spain (the home of our 31st annual conference).

Applicants must include the following: 1) CV (two pages maximum) and 2) a statement of no more than 250 words describing economic need and how the applicant would benefit from attending the annual meeting; and 3) evidence of conference acceptance.

The application deadline is 15 March of the conference year.  Applications for the scholarship should be submitted directly to the WHA Executive Director <info@thewha.org>

Please note that the scholarship, if granted, does not apply to other costs associated with the conference, including additional meals, transportation, and accommodation.

NERWHA WHA Travel Grant

The New England Regional World History Association is now accepting applications for its WHA Travel Grant, which offers two travel grants: one of $500 to a graduate student; the other $500 to a teacher (including adjuncts and other part-time teachers). Applicants must be NERWHA members (https://www.nerwha.org/) and must plan to present a paper at the WHA conference but lack sufficient funds for the journey.

In order to apply, please send a single MS Word document to the WHA Executive Director (info@thewha.org) with the following:

  • 1) a brief statement of your need;
  • 2) a travel budget with all sources of funding indicated;
  • 3) a one-page CV;
  • 4) a copy of the abstract/proposal that you presented to the WHA.

The deadline for applications is March 15th, 2022.

Temporarily Inactive Scholarships

WHA World Scholar Travel Fund

The WHA invites applicants to apply for the World Scholar Travel Fellowship.  The fellowship consists of round-trip air fare arranged by the WHA (this may cover the cost in full or in part on a case-by-case basis), accommodation at the conference, conference registration, and a modest per diem.  Priority is given to conference attendees residing outside North America who do not have travel funding from their home institutions.  All possible attempts at securing other funding should be made prior to applying for the fellowship.

The World Scholar Travel Fellowship is offered on a competitive basis.  Eligibility for the fellowship is based on acceptance by the Conference Program Committee of an individual paper, whether or not part of an organized panel, or a poster for the poster session.  No person who has received a travel fellowship in a previous year may apply for another fellowship.  Applicants must be willing to apply for and finance their own visas to the conference site.

Applicants must include the following: 1) CV (two pages maximum); and 2) a statement of no more than 250 words describing economic need and how the applicant would benefit from attending the annual meeting.  Fellowships are awarded by a selection committee appointed by the WHA President.

Conference Registration Fee Waivers

The World History Association recognizes economic hardship for some in our community by offering a limited number of partial or full registration waivers each year for those in economic need.  Eligibility includes demonstrated financial need and acceptance by the Conference Program Committee of an individual paper, whether or not part of an organized panel, or a poster for the poster session.  To qualify, applicants also must be current members of the WHA and have not received waivers in the past.  All possible attempts at securing other funding should be made prior to applying for the waiver.

The WHA has a limited number of fee waivers to offer and will award them on a competitive basis.  Priority is given to graduate students and conferees residing outside of North America who do not have travel funding from their home institutions.  Waivers are awarded by a selection committee appointed by the WHA President.

Applicants must include the following: 1) CV (two pages maximum) and 2) a statement of no more than 250 words describing economic need and how the applicant would benefit from attending the annual meeting; and 3) evidence of conference acceptance.
